GRAPHIC COLLECTION
PROMPT:
Design and produce a hand-bound graphic collection book that documents and explores the various methods, tools, techniques, and vocabulary used in design work. You have full creative freedom to determine the book’s format, layout, and visual style, but the content should be well-researched and thoughtfully presented using a mix of text, diagrams, and graphic elements to communicate effectively. The book must be physically produced and bound by hand using a binding method of your choice. This project is both a creative and technical challenge, intended to showcase your understanding of design principles, your craftsmanship, and your ability to synthesize conceptual knowledge into a cohesive, professional artifact.
RESPONSE:
For this design, I drew inspiration from the expressive and unconventional aesthetic of 1990s grunge-rock culture, adopting a collage-based visual approach to reflect its raw, dynamic energy. The layout features bold, high-contrast colors, cutout imagery, layered textures, and intentionally varied compositions from page to page, creating a sense of movement and visual tension. This stylistic direction was informed by in-depth research into vintage rock posters, underground zines, and grunge-era design, all of which contributed to the development of a cohesive yet experimental visual language. The final product represents a deliberate fusion of educational content and visual storytelling, balancing clarity with creative expression. It serves not only as a functional design resource but also as a reflection of my ability to integrate research, conceptual thinking, and a distinct personal aesthetic into a professional piece.
